There are so many babies who struggle with the mot

There are so many babies who struggle with the motion, angle and separation of being in the car, and having had one of these babies myself, I know how tough it can be!

In a perfect world, would it be best to attend to your child’s cries?

Absolutely.

Being alone in the back seat can mimic the same stress and separation as sleep training does, and we all know how I feel about that 🙅🏻‍♀️

𝐁𝐔𝐓 - we have to run errands, go to appointments, visit with family etc. - and not all of this can be done by foot.

Here are my top tips to help a baby feel more comfortable in the carseat:

✨Babies attach through proximity to their primary caregiver. Replicate this proximity by transferring your scent to a lovey that will safely fit in the car seat. Wear it in your shirt for a day or two, or spill some breastmilk on it before going on your next outing.

✨Make the car feel safe and familiar by using the same white noise as is used in your baby’s sleep environment

✨Many babies, especially those with reflux, struggle with the angle of the car seat. Check your car seat manual, as many allow for a wedge to be placed under the base in order to adjust the angle upward. Some babies also do better in the car once they are in a convertible car seat.

✨Use your voice - sing a familiar song, or speak in a calming manner. Remember that if you are stressed, your baby will be too, so stay as calm as possible.

✨Avoid long trips when possible, and plan breaks in a longer trip in order to take your baby out to comfort them. Babies are not capable of down regulation and will need your help! Leave enough time for connection and comfort when you arrive, too.

✨Hang a photo of yourself where baby can see it - I know it sounds crazy, but I’ve done it and it works!

Unpopular opinion: the on-the-go nap is your friend!

This is another big one that sleep trainers hate me saying, because it undermines their entire nap training plan.

Here’s why an on-the-go nap can be a good thing:

✨ It’s a pretty reliable sleep win: most babies do really well with the movement, and sometimes you need a fall back plan if all else fails with a nap
✨ It’s a great option for the third nap of the day on a three nap schedule, when you just need a catnap, and it allows you a predictable time to get out of the house every day
✨ It can help you avoid over tiredness that can interfere with more consolidated nighttime sleep
✨ It stops you from feeling like a slave to your child’s schedule and sleep space!

Did your baby fall asleep on the “wrong” side to transfer into their sleep space? Use this trick to switch the over the “right” side!

➡️ Support neck and back with one hand

➡️ Place free arm under bum, and swivel baby to opposite knee

➡️ Move baby’s arm down, then use your hand from baby’s bum to guide their head and neck safely onto your arm

➡️ Use your free arm to to lift baby’s legs while supporting their hips with your other arm

I’ve demonstrated this before and the most common question has been - how do you know which is the wrong side?! For me, the wrong side was my right side, because if I put my baby in the crib with his head on my right arm, I couldn’t see him in the monitor! It also depends which is the stronger side of your body!

Today is day 22 of my 30 Tips series!

Separation anxiety tends to peak around the 9 month mark when babies begin to understand object permanence. If you’re noticing more clinginess around this age, it’s totally normal!

Even after 9 months of age, separation anxiety tends to come back from time to time, generally when there are big leaps in development, changes to routines, or new caregivers in the mix.

Offering extra comfort when your child is going through separation anxiety goes a lot farther than the old school mindset of letting them “figure it out” for themselves. Offering that comfort teaches your child that you are there to support their emotions.

In addition to offering comfort when needed, Gordon Neufeld talks about the concept of ‘playing with alarm’ - showing your child that even when you leave, you’ll always come back for them.
