This is a classic case of ‘it’s not you, it’

This is a classic case of ‘it’s not you, it’s me’… drowsy but awake doesn’t work, and it’s not because you’re doing it wrong. It’s because it’s likely the wrong approach for your baby.

This is probably the most common sleep myth, and is the pinnacle of sleep training advice. But the truth is, anyone who has tried to put a baby down “drowsy but awake” knows it’s next to impossible!⠀

Here’s what you can try instead:

👉🏽 Hold your child to sleep, and then transfer them into their sleep space once they are fully asleep

Check out my reel on my ‘over under’ technique to make the transfer as smooth as possible. You can also try using a heating pad to warm the crib before placing baby in the crib, so that there isn’t a temperature change in addition to a location change

👉🏽 Put your child in the crib awake, and use other sleep associations to help them to sleep - this may be voice, touch, presence etc. You cannot spoil a baby, and there is no such thing as negative sleep associations, so if it’s working for your baby, don’t stress over needing to remove it.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Wolves are the night owls of the sleep chronotypes, feeling most alive and productive during the late afternoon and evening hours. They often struggle to wake up early in the morning and may experience grogginess and reduced alertness during the early part of the day. However, once the evening rolls around, wolves come alive, experiencing a surge in energy and creativity. Their natural inclination towards nocturnal activities can sometimes clash with societal expectations, leading to difficulties in adhering to traditional schedules. About 15% of the population has this chronotype.

These ridiculous (and arguably, harmful) assertion

These ridiculous (and arguably, harmful) assertions are peddled to parents by sleep trainers who claim these are the answers to every tired parents’ problems.

But you know what the answer to tired parents’ problems really are?

👉🏼 Added connection with baby, to make them feel safe (and thus, sleep better and longer)
👉🏼 Identifying any underlying issues that may be exacerbating sleep disruptions
👉🏼 Recognizing biologically normal infant sleep - and planning accordingly
👉🏼 Trusting parental instincts

Separation is not the answer!

It may have been meant as a joke, but it’s time

It may have been meant as a joke, but it’s time we start shedding light on the problematic nature of phrases that insinuate that biologically normal infant sleep is meant to happen in long, consolidated stretches.

Here are some completely normal infant sleep behaviours that you can expect from your baby:
✔️ short naps
✔️ feeds throughout the night
✔️ falling asleep while eating
✔️ needing support to get to sleep or to stay asleep
✔️ variations in sleep needs from one day to the next
✔️ sleep interruptions around major developmental milestones, growth spurts, or life changes (such as transitions to a new caregiver, moving to a new home, daylights savings etc.)

If your baby is doing any of these, they are not generally cause for concern. If you’re having trouble sorting out what’s normal, what may not be, and where there may be room for some adjustments, that’s where I can help 💕

They thrive on routine and structure, often planning their days meticulously to maximize productivity. Lions tend to experience a gradual decline in energy levels as the day progresses, feeling most tired and ready for bed by the early evening. Despite their propensity for early mornings, lions can struggle with staying awake during late-night activities and may prioritize getting a full night’s sleep over social engagements.

Babies need reassurance and comfort to feel secure, building trust and attachment. Sleep associations are normal and can provide a sense of safety for babies, aiding in their ability to feel safe enough to fall asleep independently, when developmentally appropriate.

You are not a bad habit for your child

Your child doesn’t need to “learn” to sleep without you 
Your instincts to support your child will never be wrong

Your child will sleep independently one day, whether you support them or separate from them - the difference is in how safe they feel doing it
