Why is my child waking at night?

First, I think it’s important to know that everyone wakes at night. This is why the concept of “linking sleep cycles” exists (even though I don’t believe this is something that can be ‘fixed’ or ‘taught’). Sleep is our most vulnerable state and we are biologically designed to wake periodically to assess the safety of our environment.

When we wake, we will go immediately back to sleep if we do not have a need to be met. However, if there is something we need to attend to (for adults, this could be a trip to the bathroom or a drink of water, for example), then we will get up an attend to it.

For babies and young children, they need help attending to these needs.

Just like anything else with babies and young chil

Just like anything else with babies and young children, sleep progressions, or periods of interrupted sleep, come at different times for different babies, based on when they are approaching different developmental milestones. Progressions happen, on average, around similar times for most babies, which is why we hear so much about interruptions around 4, 6, 8-10, 12, 18 and 24 months of age.

Your baby’s sleep is not regressing, it’s PROgressing - and this is because they are hitting major developmental milestones. Once they meet that milestone, sleep tends to even out a bit.

So if your baby is in the midst of a sleep progression, what should you do? Get sleep by any means necessary!

During the 4 month progression specifically, there is a fundamental change in a baby’s sleep structure that alters sleep cycles from a more infantile state, to becoming more similar to adult sleep cycles.

Typically, the sleep you get post-progression is actually a better indication of your child’s sleep capabilities than the sleep before the 4 month progression.

While in the midst of a progression:
👉🏽 Don’t worry about creating supposed “bad habits” like bouncing, rocking, nursing etc.
👉🏽 Get sleep by any means necessary
👉🏽 Avoid falling into the trap of believing that 4 months is the “perfect” time to sleep train - your baby needs more support, 𝘯𝘰𝘵 more separation

I completely understand why sleep deprivation is u

I completely understand why sleep deprivation is used as a form of torture - it can make us not just physically unwell, but emotionally and mentally unwell as well.

Which is why it’s such a natural argument that sleep trainers make - if poor sleep leads to parental mental health issues, then the only way to fix it is by guaranteeing that parents get more sleep.

The problem is, sleep training can’t guarantee anything. It can’t guarantee that a baby will sleep better (or at all); it can’t guarantee that parents will struggle any less (hello legitimate postpartum mood disorders!); and it can’t guarantee that the process of sleep training won’t be detrimental to parent or baby! On a personal note, the process of sleep training our first was worse for my mental health than anything else in that first year as a new parent. And that’s to say nothing of the conflicting evidence in support of sleep training being innocuous.

So why do sleep trainers pull out the ‘mom shaming’ card when professionals like me begin to support parents without sleep training? Maybe they feel threatened in their business, or maybe they feel guilt for choosing that path for their own children 🤷🏻‍♀️. After all, how many times have we heard the “it was awful, but it worked” argument? If something feels awful, it feels that way for a reason 🚩🚩

In any event, it doesn’t really matter. What matters is knowing that if you feel pressure to sleep train, or if you’ve been told you’re judgemental for not agreeing with the practice, you’re in the right place. Choosing not to sleep train doesn’t mean doing nothing. It can, if that’s the right fit for your family; but it can also mean choosing to use responsive parenting practices, coupled with our knowledge of childhood attachment and development, to get better sleep without sleep training.

These ridiculous (and arguably, harmful) assertions are peddled to parents by sleep trainers who claim these are the answers to every tired parents’ problems.

But you know what the answer to tired parents’ problems really are?

👉🏼 Added connection with baby, to make them feel safe (and thus, sleep better and longer)
👉🏼 Identifying any underlying issues that may be exacerbating sleep disruptions
👉🏼 Recognizing biologically normal infant sleep - and planning accordingly
👉🏼 Trusting parental instincts

Separation is not the answer!

I was at the bank today and started schmoozing with the representative who was helping me open a children’s account for my oldest. He was commiserating about how hard parenting is in the 21st century: it’s more expensive, there is more to worry about, and there is so.much.more pressure on parents than ever before. Social media aside, people tend to criticize millennial parents for not being present enough, and it’s created a culture where we feel like we always have to keep our kids busy and entertained.

If this sounds anything like you, I’m here to remind you that your job is not to be the director of entertainment; your job is to encourage free play.

Independent, imaginative play is so important for young minds. SO even though we feel the pressure to make it happen, the best thing we can do is let it come naturally.

Here are a few tips to help take the pressure off:

Encourage open ended play: Even if this involves actual toys, allow your child to use their creativity to determine how to use them. Check out the last slide for an adorable pic of my middle kiddo with his new Paw Patrol vehicle, generously gifted to us by @spinmaster and @thisisbutterly. I love watching the situations they put the pups in, and they love playing with their favourite characters. I’d definitely recommend this toy!

Ask open ended questions: Can you tell me what you’re doing; what do you think might happen if…?; how can you solve this problem? Etc.

Play can happy anytime, anywhere: Whether it’s in a typical play environment, at the park, or in their sleep space, play doesn’t have to be separated from other activities. The more you can integrate play into daily life, the better!
