Sit with that for a second. Because if that felt Sit with that for a second.

Because if that felt good to read - I need you to ask yourself why.

We built an entire multi-million dollar industry around telling parents to ignore the most primal instinct they have. We took a biological need and rebranded it as a behaviour problem. We created a method, slapped a price tag on it, and told exhausted, vulnerable parents that if they couldn’t walk away from their screaming baby - they were the ones doing it wrong.

And we believed them.

Not because it’s right. Because we were desperate. And desperation is profitable.

The moms who couldn’t do it - who went back in, who sobbed outside the door, who trusted the thing screaming inside their chest - they got labelled as the problem. Told they were creating bad habits. Ruining their child. Weak.

It’s not a sleep method.

It’s a culture that learned to applaud infant distress, monetise maternal guilt, and call it science.

And we just… let it happen.

👇 Say something. I know you have thoughts.

Sleep cannot be taught. I know that might feel li Sleep cannot be taught.

I know that might feel like a strange thing to hear from a sleep coach. But it’s the truth, and it’s the thing I wish someone had told me when I was sitting outside my daughter’s room in 2014, convinced I was teaching her an important lifelong skill.

Sleep is a biological function. Like digestion, like breathing. It happens when the conditions are right. It cannot be forced, and it cannot be learned through repetition.

What sleep training actually does is change a baby’s behaviour around sleep. It reduces signalling. It creates the appearance of sleep consolidation. But the research doesn’t actually show that sleep-trained babies sleep better long-term than babies who were never sleep trained at all.

What we CAN do — and what I spend all of my time doing — is figure out why sleep is hard for your specific child. Is it temperament? A feeding issue? An airway concern? A nervous system that needs more support than most? An environment that isn’t set up for their particular sleep needs?

Once you understand the why, the how becomes a lot clearer.

If you’re exhausted and starting to wonder if there’s another way, there is. Drop a comment or send me a message. I’d love to help you figure out where to start.

Sleep training was created to ensure babies would Sleep training was created to ensure babies would no longer be an inconvenience to the adults around them. Someone decided that society as a whole would be better off if we could get women back in the workforce and back in the bedroom as quickly as possible, and thus was born the biologically mis-aligned practice of sleep training.

And I KNOW that those who believe in it are so hardlined that they can’t see the forest for the trees, but this rant isn’t meant to convince them.

It’s meant to reach the tired parents who feel they have no choice but to ignore their instincts.

It’s meant for the parents and babies for whom sleep training didn’t work - and may have underlying issues that were missed (like the client I mentioned in this video).

It’s meant for anyone who has second guessed why they’ve been told to follow a plan or a set of rules, without ever being given research or a logical explanation to back it up.

Sleep training is good for society, and bad for babies. Convince me otherwise.

After six of working with families of highly sensi After six of working with families of highly sensitive children, there’s one thing I see over and over again:

Parents who have been told their child is “difficult,” “dramatic,” or “too sensitive” when the reality is they just haven’t been given the right framework to understand their child.

Once parents learn what’s actually happening in their child’s brain, everything shifts. The meltdowns start to make sense. The triggers become predictable. And the guilt starts to lift because you finally realize it was never about you doing something wrong.

This is exactly the kind of shift we’re creating at the Raising Highly Sensitive Kids Summit 2. 15+ experts. 2 days. Completely free. March 11-12.

I’ll be presenting on sleep and would love to see you there.

Over and over again, we’ve been sold the idea that Over and over again, we’ve been sold the idea that sleep training is safe. But here’s the truth: we don’t actually know. The absence of proven harm isn’t the same as certainty. What we do know, without question, is that responsiveness carries zero risk.

I’m so done withthe gaslight-y BS of the sleep training industry, who consistently try to convince parents that their instincts are the problem.

Don’t be weak.

Sit on your hands.

You’re teaching them a valuable lesson.

What lesson is that, exactly? Well, considering that sleep is a biological function that happens whether you like it or not, there is only one clear lesson that sleep training offers. It’s that your child can’t rely on you responding to their calls between the hours of 7pm and 7am. And arguably more importantly, sleep training teaches parents to ignore that instinct to respond, ensuring we second guess ourselves every time our child cries.

Are they really in distress, or is it just manipulation?

Personally, that’s not a question I ever want to answer – for myself or my cients.

You can support a baby’s sleep without relying on separation or outdated shortcuts. Without following a pdf of rules from someone who has never considered your baby’s temperament. From an industry designed to force mothers back into the workforce (and back into the bedroom) far sooner than they are likely ready.

There’s a middle path – one where connection and sleep can coexist. If you’re ready to drop the guesswork and find a path that aligns with your instincts, I’m here to help. Let’s build sleep solutions that respect your baby and your gut.
